Theology of the Body and Love & Responsibility

Event Description

Dr. Christopher West, President of the Theology of the Body Institute in the United States, is coming to Denmark on June 9th and 10th to unpack for us the treasures of Saint John Paul II’s revolutionary works on the human person and human love: Theology of the Body and Love & Responsibility.

Friday, June 9, 19:00-21:00:

Come and Become One Who Sees: Opening Our Eyes to the Theology of our Bodies

What does it mean to speak of our bodies as a “theology” – a study of God?  We live in a world that claims the human body has no meaning other than what we assign to it ourselves.  Christianity, on the other hand, proclaims that the human body is meant to reveal Ultimate Meaning.  How does your body reveal God’s plan for the universe?  Come to this presentation, and become one who sees!

Saturday, June 10, 9:00 - 16:30:

Introducing Love into Love: A Day of Reflection on Saint John Paul II’s Revolutionary Book Love & Responsibility

It has been said that Saint John Paul II’s book Love and Responsibility deserves a place on the list of the Great Books of the Western world.  Therein he wrote that one of the greatest sufferings in life is when love turns out to be something other than love.  His goal in Love and Responsibility is to help people avoid such disillusionments by introducing genuine love back into love.  And he does so with remarkably keen insights that illuminate the human heart as much as they resonate deeply within it.  Sadly, what we consider “love” often turns out to be two people using each other.  How can we experience erotic attraction and desire in a way that upholds the dignity of the person as a treasure to be loved and not a thing to be used and discarded?  Come and rediscover your own ability-to-respond to love!

Christopher West’s passion for the sacramentality of beauty (how finite beauty points to infinite Beauty) has led to a prolific career as a Catholic theologian, author, and global lecturer devoted to helping others “see” and encounter the divine mystery as it is revealed in and through our physical world, especially the human body. Dr. West serves as president of the Theology of the Body Institute near Philadelphia and as Professor of Theological Anthropology in its jointly sponsored master’s program with Pontifex University. His work has been featured in The New York Times, on ABC News, Fox News, MSNBC, and in countless Catholic and evangelical media outlets.

Books such as Homer’s Odyssey and Illiad, Augustine’s Confessions, and Dante’s Divine Comedy … have had such an enduring appeal since they address the great questions which plague all men, questions which help us determine what sense we can make of the world around us and our place in it.  I maintain that the pope’s book belongs in this group, since I think generations to come will read his book – they certainly should do so, for if they do they will find that it boldly confronts questions we all have about life and offers a way of viewing human relationships which, if accepted, would radically alter the way in which we conduct our lives.
